Sutter Health is searching for an inspired Director of Behavioral Health for their behavioral health hospital, Kahi Mohala Hospital, in Ewa Beach on Oahu, Hawaii.

The Director is responsible for the overall leadership, development, and management of psychological, social work, and ancillary therapies provided to patients within both the inpatient and outpatient services.

Provides administrative and clinical supervision, directly or through appropriately licensed others, to the professional staff within the department.

Ensures the staff receives appropriate training and resources in order to facilitate best practice and evidenced-based treatment.

Manages the development of departmental budgets for assigned areas that meet the goals developed by senior management, including operating revenue and expense, capital and staffing budgets and ensures that systems are in place to monitor budget variances and to adjust resource consumption as needed.

Oversees effective quality improvement activities are in place in their areas of responsibility to continuously improve the quality of care provided to patients and their families.

Responsible for compliance to all related state, federal and Joint Commission regulations in collaboration Director of Operations and other hospital leaders.


  • Develops implements and manages evidence-based therapeutic services across the inpatient and outpatient services based on the needs of the patients served.

  • Facilitates the implementation of performance improvement programs in all areas of responsibility.

  • Collaborates with other departments to implement newly designed programming and/or performance improvement plans.

  • Manages implementation of treatment programs recommended by Medical Executive Committee, Leadership Team or PI Committee.

  • Assists the Leadership Team in managing accreditation activities of the programs.

  • Ensures that defined performance measures for all therapeutic initiatives are in place, monitored and achieved.

  • Addresses opportunities for improvement in therapeutic programs through written plans that include action plans, monitoring and timeframes.

  • Assures readiness and compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements.

  • Responsible for having systems in place to assure appropriate discharge planning for individual patients.

  • Provides direction and assurance that systems are in place for the appropriate provision of psychology services in all treatment programs.

  • Oversees implementation of patient-based behavioral and rehabilitative programming.

  • Maintains consistent, clear, and timely documentation on assessments and/or progress of patients seen

  • Maintains confidentiality of privileged information and communication regarding patients and families.

  • Submits community benefit report on a quarterly basis for time spent supervising psychology, social work or recreational therapy students.

  • Oversees the development and management of FTE and Operating budgets for multiple departments as assigned.

  • Maintains statistical data and reports as required by funding agencies.

  • Facilitates the professional growth of staff supervised.

  • Ensures that direct reports provide leadership to the process of planning and evaluation of patient care delivery.


  • Maintains strictest confidence of all patient protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.

  • Performs care in compliance with department standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state and federal regulatory agencies to deliver the highest level of patient privacy and care.

  • Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and licensure requirements.

Requirements / Certification / Licensure

  • Ph.D or Psy. D Required

  • LCSW-Licensed Clinical Social Worker Upon Hire OR LMFT-Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist


  • 5 years experience of leadership in acute care behavioral health leadership including multi-site facility management.

  • 5 years experience implementing best practices in treatment, quality and patient safety Knowledge of complex medical and mental health conditions and national standards of quality care.

  • 5 years experience in the behavioral health field in an inpatient facility.


  • Knowledge of administrative and clinical areas with special emphasis on hospital and/or other healthcare settings and standards of patient care.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, along with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements, including The Joint Commission (TJC), California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Title 22 specifications.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology to include diagnostic and operative procedures.

  • Knowledge of State, Federal, and Profession Industry Standards pertaining to healthcare practice.

  • Conceptual, analytical, and problem solving skills in a complex environment.
